Metformin (Glucophage)

Metformin increases the sensitivity of muscle and fat tissue to the hormone insulin. This makes it easier for the body to drive blood glucose into cells where it is used for energy. It also cuts the amount of sugar that the liver pushes out into the bloodstream. This improves insulin sensitivity.

FAQs

When am I a candidate for weight loss medication?

If you have an initial body mass index (BMI) >30 OR

If your BMI > 27 with at least one "co-morbidity" such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, etc.

Please remember, weight loss medication are NOT a magic pill. They will help decrease your appetite and help decrease your cravings. You MUST also incorporate healthy dietary and lifestyle changes to achieve your goal weight. All medications have side effects and many may NOT be covered by your insurance. Many people need to stay on these medications lifelong to maintain their healthy size! This is a commitment.

How do I know if weight loss medications are covered?

Please check with your insurance plan on pharmacy benefits prior to your first appointment. Approximately one-third of insurances currently cover weight loss medication. Many insurances say that Ozempic and Mounjaro are covered with a prior authorization, but do not tell patients these are only covered under their plan for type 2 diabetes. We work primarily with a specialty pharmacy to assist with the prior authorization process so Lisa can focus on providing patient care.

Do you take insurance?

Journey Med PLLC does not currently take insurance and is considered out-of- network. We will keep your insurance and pharmacy benefits cards on file to prescribe weight loss medication and help with prior authorization. After practicing for 10 years within the in-network system, Lisa decided to leave it in order to provide more personal and extensive care that does not fit into the average 10 minutes a doctor spends with a patient.

We will help you navigate reimbursement with a superbill provided at the end of each visit for you to submit appropriate codes and receipts to your insurance company.  For many plans with out of network benefits, you can get reimbursement up to 60-80% of the fee once the annual deductible has been satisfied.   Please check with your insurance company as they differ as far as this type of coverage.

Do you prescribed compounded medication?

Branded medications are the only FDA approved sources of injectables and are recommended. No current medical society supports the use of compounded medication. We work closely with a local pharmacy to ensure best pricing and availability.

We do work closely with a compounding pharmacy where dosing and quality of compounded medications are tested to ensure safety. However, bacterial and fungal infections have occurred leading to a small number of deaths. Compounded medications will be considered only if branded medications are not covered or are unaffordable.

Why work with Journey Med?

Lisa formed Journey Med because the major healthcare system has lost focus on the patient in order to extract maximum profit as the primary focus. Journey Med’s approach is individualized and whole-person oriented. We spend quality time with patients, working on sustainable lifestyle and dietary changes that last. A recent study noted that more than half of patients who initiated a glp-1 medication-driven weight loss regimen stopped treatment within 12 weeks, without achieving meaningful results. This is due to a lack of support and unmanaged sided effects. Journey Med will help work through your journey so that you achieve sustainable health.

Do you charge a cancellation fee?

Out of respect for everyone’s time, we do request that you notify us at least  24 hours in advance of your visit of any cancellations. A visit cancelled less than 24 hours prior would incur a $50 cancellation fee.
